Salt, salted foods and FEP gains

Postby NightMind » Wed Feb 04, 2026 5:24 am

It feels like Salt is currently bugged as it does not reduce but replace satiation.

Let's say a Meat Pie grants you 100 FEPs (after all modification) and 10% Hunger
You want to Salt it. Salt reduces hunger by -10% at q10. You salted some other food and currently have 40% Salt satiation, and 0% Meat Pie satiation.
If you don't salt it:
You get 100 FEPs and 10% Hunger to your char, as well as some n% Meat Pie satiation.
If you don't have any satiation and you salt it:
You get 100 FEPs and 9% Hunger to your char
Expected Behavior wrote:If you Salt:
You get 100 FEPs and 10*(1-(0.1[hunger reduction]*(1-0.4[salt satiation])) = 10*(1-0.1*0.6) = 9.4% Hunger to your char.
Your Meat Pie satiation increases by n%
Your Salt satiation also increases by m%.

Instead
Observed Behavior wrote:If you Salt:
You get 100*(1-0.4[salt satiation])=60 FEPs and 10*(1-(0.1[hunger reduction]*(1-0.4[salt satiation])) = 10*(1-0.1*0.6) = 9.4% Hunger to your char.
Your Meat Pie satiation is UNCHANGED
Your Salt satiation also increases by m%.

In essense, game treats salted food as if you eat pure salt, you get heavily reduced FEP points which erase any possible hunger reduction benefits.

Rock Salt as a seasoning is worse than useless. +1 for changing it to at least not punish those who use it, if otherwise non-functional.
I would genuinely be in favor of LARP salt only (Salty Tears and A Flavor, Savored experiences, anyone?), compared to what we have now.

In its current implementation, I will absolutely never use it again, after ruining an entire table's worth of food with it. I have found no conceivable reason why otherwise good food should have reduced FEP gains, which is the only thing that rock salt accomplishes at the moment.

Yes, I'm salty.

Will look at it!

I don't know what the intended use is, but it certainly has a use, despite above posts.
You eat 30 autumn steaks on your miner, then you salt 30 and eat 30 more.
This lets you double dip on your most effective food, substiuting satiations.

Salt, in it's spiced form, is also a tremendously useful bulk spice which you can use to increse the quality of produced foods. It's cheap and generally available in higher quality than other spices especially in early and mid game.

This. It still has some uses if it just replaces the satiation, I've been often eating it with the shepherd pies once my shepherd pie satiation was too high.
It's a very niche use, I'd say the main problem is that salt satiation doesn't seem to be decreased with any drink, so it doesn't exactly doubles the amount of food of certain type that can be eaten. High quality drinks are surprisingly effective.

Nothing wrang with salt and salted food, like the above posters said. Tooltip could provide a better explanation though.
