You can always toggle swimming on no matter where you are. It's a safety net to make sure if you happen to lose your boat in deep water, it's not a death sentence.

The problem, IIRC, is climbing off the cliff. There's no way to break away from the cliff like you would normally do if you were just walking. You get stuck on it and can't move (or, at least, that used to be the problem... maybe it's changed?)

Would probably be a good warning just like not being able to walk into deep water without turning it on. Seems like loftar wasn't too keen on this as the solution in the past, but I might be suffering from a fuzzy memory on it.

Generally good precautions. I don't know the number of times I accidentally control click when I'm boating around. And you certainly don't want to accidentally start swimming when you're running around trying to do things near the water (or semi-afk while shift-moving long distances). Learn the hotkey combo by heart: a>t>s. Stick it on a hot bar. Also...
