Moreover, though, my rig as by all reasonable accounts worse than yours (Core i5 2400, nVidia GF 560), and I have better performance than that, so something is clearly weird, but it is a good question just what.
If only to rule something out, are you using 32-bit Java? if so, please try and upgrade to 64-bit Java and see if that makes a difference. While the bitness shouldn't make a difference in and of itself, rumors are that 32-bit Java only uses the tier-1 JIT by default when running on Windows, and that could certainly make a difference.
