You can split boarhide in the tanning tub (and probably other hides), but you can't put a patch of boarhide manually into tanning tub.

Hide patches can't be tanned, this is correct. Might be fixed at some point in the future.

Sorry to bring this up but I couldn't find it anywhere else...

What are the split hides used for, then? I've split a fox hide to test and the only thing I could do with it was straps.

Works as hide, for all recipes that requires that. Poultices, for instance.

Ohhh, that's interesting. So if I try to make a hide cloak, for example (8 pieces of dried hide if I'm not mistaken) instead of using (not that I would ever do that - just an example) 8 dried boar hides... I can just split 2 boar hides into 8 patches and use 'em?

Indeed. You can use the hide straight up without splitting it first, even. You get proper change.
