He probably renamed you in his buddy list. I'm quite sure you can assign a custom name to anyone on your list.

Well, I mean, it looks like he's using the vanilla client so there's no backend shenanigans going on, not even sure if that information would be viewable by a custom client anyhow. He must have known who you were somehow.
