Not getting combat discoveries

I wanted to get some combat discoveries so I went ant hunting. During 10 minutes I had 3 combat discoveries (this golden moves during a fight), but when I used them nothing happened. I didn't get any of them, I got no notification and so on. I'm pretty sure there were Quick Dodge and Take Aim moves. Still my combat deck is as basic as it was.

But how do I put out red and yellow defences if I have no attacks of such type? -_-

You move a bit away from ant so that hopefully that red/yellow defence times out as they try to use attack move on you.

Or, you can keep your own defenses up while waiting and keep the targets new defenses knocked down so that as soon as the troublesome one times out, you can hit it and get your discovery.
