Help! My health depleted in a cave for no reason!?

My character had a solid 53 hard health left. I entered a cave and explored until I saw that a landslide was blocking the path. I turned around to head back but noticed my health was being depleted at a rapid rate at 2's and 3's. Before I knew it I had 8 hard health left. I hearthed to leave the cave, but even after I hearthed the damage kept piling until my eventual death. No monster was attacking me and I didnt have any leeches on. The depletion from 53 to 0 health took less than 30 seconds. I wonder if this is some kind of bug? If it is, I'd really like my character back. Thanks, Italorr.
