Endless discovery

Postby Jorg » Thu Jan 18, 2018 3:55 am

Ever since the newest update, I've been getting discoveries for everything, even if I had already discovered it. Curiously, I've been getting them from different sources for the same object(IE, Plucking feathers from a chicken AND a rooster gave me TWO discoveries, not one for chicken feathers.) Client is Romov's, though that shouldn't magic LP's into existence. I haven't updated the client since before the update.

first off, i thought Jorb made this thread, second, i do believe he said this would happen in the original update post, since everything has its own unique id now.

Any time object information is changed (ie the way the server handles identification of the object), you get discovery LP, so yeah, as AntiBlitz says, this is expected.

This is the interesting one. If intended, then could mean different things in the future for what we can and can't craft. Could be the discovery process is looking at the source of the object instead of the object, could mean that the feathers are inheriting the "rooster" or "hen" properties, and that could mean different options for crafting in the future. Could just be a bug of the new system. For now, I'd say gather branches from every tree you can and split every type of block of wood you can to make branches. (Might count as same source as "maple" or "oak" from both the tree and block and do nothing... but no harm in trying.)

Suspect that this is not a bug. You can get two discoveries (or more) from one item -- i.e. discovering both feather (generic) and chicken feather from chicken feather -- and unless you're getting the same discoveries over and over again I don't think there's cause for concern. Auto-generating the input types implied adding several new ones, so it's reasonable to expect that there are quite a few new discoveries to be made.

Possibly the value of them should be adjusted then, as the increased amount of them speeds up character progression?

I've been getting repeat discoveries on bats (This character has already killed and butchered probably hundreds of bats), so unless there is an absurd amount of new discoveries generated, there might be some slight issues. Interestingly, I've mostly gotten repeat discoveries on living creatures.

Are you certain it's the discovery mechanic? Killing animals rewards a small amount of lp, so it sounds like you're just receiving your regular lp bonus upon killing animals.

Arguably a bit faster character progression from one time sources is no big deal. I don't think I mind, but I'll roll a new character and try it out a bit at some point.

Unless killing animals gives lp minutes after killing them, only on the moment of butchering, with an animation of two sticks making fire as is characteristic of a discovery, then yes, I'm rather certain that it's a discovery. Unless there IS a glitch where killing animals causes the discovery animation, and rather delayed at that. I cannot totally remember if the bats were killed in different areas, which would source different discoveries, if quests required bats be killed in different areas or on different levels.
