in Salem there were lobster nodes, you had to test many areas

Patchnotes indicated that lobster nodes are a thing, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that, simply, no one has found one yet.

They're small (2x3), and you can fill them with bait while still carrying them in your inventory. Pretty easy to mass produce/set up.

Also, we can put traps in rivers and lakes, though...

Well, we can put fishing nets in areas without any fish too. Makes more sense to me than magic "there is nothing to catch here" message out of nowhere...
