Saddlebag of dead horses

when i collected the bones of a dead horse with a saddle bag it just vanished, it is the intended mechanic?

I couldn't find it by searching but I recall another bug report years back where someone found a way to cause their saddlebags to disappear. I specifically remember the OP sacrificing another pair of saddlebags to ensure they had the correct reproduction steps for the bug. I think it involved live horses.
