I forgot to mention that they are not the ones I killed, but the ones I found lying around already dead.
Perhaps killed by a wolf?

Are you sure you're not looking at a greyed out fox icon and you think it's a wolf?
Post a screenshot maybe?

I think greying out corpses is a relatively new feature in vanilla, it probably was a dead fox icon

Oh ... I didn't know about greying out icons ... Is this a thing?
The corpse was reddish as usuals, and gave everything ... I have to check q. perhaps.

Ohhh right, I was thinking it was a wolf .... I was also quite scared at first ... not exactly clear however ... maybe tint it a darker red, but not grey ... it looks like a wolf

Edit:

I see ... all the animals are like that now .... kinda cool, except for the fox ... well, now I know but I think I will get scared again.

What about just using a texture over the icon, as for decay, lines or squares over it .... changing colours is a bit meh in terms of clarity.
