Chameleon Corndolly lanterns - bug or feature?

Why are Corndolly Lanters taking the color of their surroundings?
What are they plotting?
What is their training and clearance?
I'm scared.

I think this might a side effect of putting them on the rope for lantern posts as they will take on the color scheme of the post, probably not entirely intentional and this also happens on regular study desks, not just the new one.
