@ Granger - I get what you are saying and agree to a degree but, not with your solutions which really just hamper game play, you can't really suggest that people stay on their claims or get penalized in some way!

I don't think you should be able to claim water anyway, as for other claims ... well, as V says, they do serve a legitimate purpose in claiming nodes and all the time people are able to make alts to claim I can't really see a solution. If we just had the one char then there could be an increased authority on each additional claim, can't even make it account based as we can have as many accounts as we can be bothered to make and in fact everything else I can come up with, such as empty claims costing more upkeep, has a work around.
So, just make water unclaimable.

The current claim system is fine for me. Ideally, you'd expect more claims overall because it really just means that you planted your flag and called it yours. There's no unclaimed land irl for example.

But it could be reworked. Claims for which the owner didn't give public access could cost more to maintain. Most importantly, every claim's upkeep should be increased and based on experience in order to prevent abuses - if it's yours, you have to maintain your authority over it.

I think we'll all agree that claim and village authority decay rates are ridiculous and were never a deterrent for anything.

I would say the problem with claims are these two points:

- Traversing and gathering water is such a staple in this game that preventing it from happening should not be allowed. Being able to claim rivers/lakes, considering that it's the common method of travel for everyone and that the resource of water & sand does not have to regenerate like the other resources do, claiming them does not make as much sense.

- Being able to prevent removal of new claims by surrounding claim stakes with leantos.

Solutions:
My suggestion for the first point is to still allow claiming of sand and water, however, all players will still have access to dig sand, gather water, and traverse water without leaving scents (and without taking HP damage) or requiring theft/vandalism/tresspassing on any claimed water or sand (Note; this will NOT effect clay which if claimed will still prevent others from digging it unless they have the appropriate skills and will still leave a scent and players will take damage for digging it.)
In this way players can still keep their large claims contiguous and prevent others from still encroaching on their territory while still allowing others reasonable ways to traverse the land/gather water because it is pretty much a necessity of this game.

My suggestion for the second point is to disallow leantos being able to be built within 1 tile of another leanto.

why not get rid of the 'bond of blood and earth' item so lp doesn't get added in automatically. or make it so you can only have 1 or a few in at a time. but disappear once taken out

then people would need to 'touch' the claim to add presence

That's actually a good idea. Same for village authority, requiring some touching action to refill it.
We'd just need another mechanic for selling and trading claims, but that shouldn't be hard to implement.

i agree if you want something you should not be able to own it. because we have basic human rights and if i dont want to leave a scent when being on someones land i should have to
