We're not committed to never bringing them back, but I also like the development that some old hats have a decent price in the second hand market. Buy 'em while they're hot!

I'd rather do fresh takes on old themes.

You definitely should do one of those options then.
You are losing a lot of money by not doing it!

I played Magic for too many years and watched that market bounce all over the place because of the decisions of "we're never bringing this back" to "well, guess we'll bring it back because it fits this expansion." The dealers complained because the card values had some drop, but they started coming back up over time when the new new players wanted the old versions instead of the new ones.

Same could be done with the hats. Could be a v2.0 of the hat that has some subtle changes on it.

I must point out that no Magic card has ever received an identical reprint outside of the set's original lifecycle (i.e. the set could get a second or third print run, but once they stop distributing it never gets reprinted); each reprint of a card is in some way identifiable as not being the original (usually via the expansion symbol).

It's also worth pointing out that in MTG, cards are functional and value strongly correlates to their function, whereas in H&H all of the value of the hats are in the aesthetics; MTG has to my knowledge never reprinted purposely aesthetically special cards, and I imagine that if they were to just reprint stuff like the Zendikar Expeditions with only a different expansion symbol people would be outraged.

It's not that simple. By increasing availability, you decrease perceived value and discourage purchases. For example, I was recently on the fence about the Centurion's Helm and the Conquistador's Helmet; I won't be wearing them for a while, but there's a good chance I'll want to wear them at some point, so I could just wait until I do want to wear them. But as hats are sold only for a limited time and are never sold again after that I ended up buying them last Monday just in case they would rotate out with the new patch. Had there been a decent chance they'd end up getting 'reprinted' I may well have abstained from buying them.

Huh, I didn't realize they'd become that expensive; I'd seen some ridiculous offers but figured it was just nonsense. People have frequently been badgering me about my Feathered Tricorne at the Community Fair, and I also have stuff like the Witch Hat and the Sombrero. How much are those worth nowadays? And in a totally unrelated question, what is the devs' stance on RMT?

Identical, no, because Wizards used established methods of indicating series or set. Market value does correlate to play value, but it still doesn't mean a reprint in an unlimited set (Chronicles) or a new limited set hasn't had a a severe effect on the value of the market for specific cards. Take, for example, some of the Legends cards. High value due to very limited numbers and high demand for collectability, but little to no play value through the play formats at the time (too expensive or difficult to play, too easy to remove for a mediocre card). Chronicles comes out, markets for these cards tank completely. The market never was the same after that, either, as even the "limited" sets became unlimited print runs during their publishing phases and the reaction to Chronicles and change in the paradigm of Magic collecting. Investors (speculators) were scared away, cards with real play value become significantly more common.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
