Improving the New Player Experience in Haven & Hearth

Postby lucollins84 » Wed Mar 12, 2025 9:32 am

As a new (or returning) player, I’ve noticed that Haven & Hearth can be quite challenging to get into, especially for beginners. The learning curve is steep, and many essential mechanics aren’t explained in detail.

Wouldn’t it be great if there were better in-game tutorials, clearer tooltips, or even a more structured starting guide? What ideas do you have to make the game more accessible without taking away its depth and challenge?

That's too vague, can you be more specific for this topic?
There's already tooltips on craft menus, there's tutorial quests, there's basic skills quests that is introducing you into the mechanics.
Should anything be added, changed, or reworked there?

The "Beginning of X" quests are already a huge help?

Latest patch was literally about improving tooltips (they now display information that previously was completely hidden and had to be looked up on the Wiki.)
Haven and Hearth Wiki (Maintained by volunteers - test/verify when practical. Forum thread

Basic Claim Safety (And what you’re doing wrong
TL:;DR: Build a Palisade with only Visitor gates.)

Combat Guide (Overview, PVE, PVP) (Includes how to escape/minimize risk of getting killed.)

From where i'm sitting, it's felt like the last year or two of patches have had some big steps towards a more newb-friendly game.

The problem is we already know how to play, we need actual noobs to see if the tutorial makes the game accesible. One of the things I can think about is that nowhere in-game it tells you about safety, that you need a palisade that animals bigger than a rabbit can and Will fuck you up, that other players will steal your dried hides and leather. That anything less than a palisade is actually just for show and will not keep you safe from animals or other players.

These are great. I joined this world as a hermit after not playing for years, everything is much more accessible now.

Memory isn't perfect, neither is the wiki; here is something I think would help everyone. Have all recipes in your menus at the start of the game, they are greyed out and become highlighted as you learn them. You can hover the cursor over any "unlearned" recipe and get a popup of what you need to learn that.
