This metal progression feels terribad.

It costs an entire bar for a support that gives you the same radius as the old game's 2 nugget supports. With how much more difficult it is to get bars of metal (assuming iron ochre for iron ore, not bloodstone, bloodstone op) these supports really shouldn't be this worthless. At least they look good... right...?

Speaking of the rarity of metal, I am averaging less than a bar per FIFTY FIVE MINUTE smelt time. We're talking probably .8 or .9 of a bar per load, every 55 minutes. If the yields were increased and the time remained the same, I'd be okay. Or, on the other hand, if the yields were the same but the time was reduced to 15 or 20 minutes... That'd be alright, too. Additionally, I'm pulling 2-3 ore out of most of these walls. Some of them give me 8 or 9, but the majority still give me diddly. thx based rng.

My town started with 14 cast iron today. Five of it went in to a finery forge. I was very excited to hammer out some wrought. I poured in 9 bars, lit it for the short while it took to make the iron in to bloom, and went to check. I had a delightful 6 slag waiting for me, and 3 bloom. So, I move the anvil down in to the cave by the smelters and the forge, because it was in the claim aboveground for some reason. I hammer out the wrought... Cast iron. Okay, next one... Cast iron, and then I notice one of the other blooms turned to slag because I just wasn't fast enough to hammer it out.

Why the hell should I even keep mining?

(Don't even think about how the bats weigh in on all this. It's terrible. I have also done my best to provide information here as accurately as possible, with no exaggeration. I really wish it was exaggeration.)

Agreed -- the metal production in old H&H was something that really epitomized tedium, especially for hermits.

In this incarnation it's double tedium (from tar kilns for coal, sneaking past bats this time around) and getting a swift boot to the nuts right after you're done toiling as a reward (bats wrecking you, bloom cooling so fast, etc)

Maybe implement a 2-nugget based support like the current one (maybe requires more wood?), and implement a bigger radius for the 1-bar supports.

I mean surface ore is great and all, but with these new hindrances to progressing along, I can't really say it evens out.

supports shouldn't even require metal tbh

True, maybe there should be a small radius support which only takes wood & ropes?

And putting metal into the supports is a way of ensuring a bigger radius

no, imo it should just be wood. no reason to require metal. inb4loftar "once you figure out the system bla bla bla"

So properly plan your work ahead of time? When you have to move a anvil....slowly...from above ground to underground..you think you might choose to work with hot dangerous metals afterwards? not beforehand?
Seems like if you are planned out and on point this would all be avoided.

On another note, 1 bar for a large vein that will yield 9+ bars? so what? pay a little to gain a lot.

"Just plan ahead"

Your point about the anvil is true, but you're misquoting him on the "9+ bar" yield. He said 8 or 9 ore. Ore which isn't guaranteed to produce bars. And that's the biggest he's encountered. It's all a bit of a gamble, but it could be better give how much of a pain in the ass it is right now to pull off.

My reference to the 9+ bars is not from his comment, but from my own experience of mining tons of tin which gives high yield, and while does not have a huge amount of uses, can be used as mining supports to help get the more desirable ores. It is a gamble though, the struggle is real, either get over it or get a glass of man the fuck up juice.
