Food

Food should spoil if left for too long.
Not all food. But like raw meat, and baking products.

Foods could be treated with Sugar, Honey, or Salt to make it last longer. Bulk Salt can be found from either salt deposits by the Ocean (Sea Salt) that would spawn like boulders, Salt can also be found underground while mining, just to be called Salt. Meat treated with salt can be left in containers, or hung from Drying Racks, that turn into Jerky. Honey just increases the time before spoiling on all foods, could make Honey Farming a specialty on some characters. Sugar does the same thing, but to a lesser extent, and increases the Energy a food gives. Idk how sugar could be made, maybe a press and some certain plants or something.

Just some ideas.

Sugar could be made from sugar beets. But yes, indeed. Meat could be dried or salted. Some berries and fruits could be made into jam. Food, or some foods, could last longer if placed in cellar.

Not too fond of decay for the sake of decay.

Its not really decay for the sake of decay. I'd say its to add another element to the survival aspect of the game. Which is sort of lacking.
Alternatively, you could have foods FEPs lower as they age. Maybe have cheese FEP's raise to a certain point even.

"decay for the sake of decay", mhm. Because we're having so much interesting activities in game after a certain point, right?

I told before and I say again. SInce we don't have the possibility for limitless upgrade, we could at least be confronted with constant (controlled) decay of achieved goals. Decaying food (or any organic materials, for that matter) is a step in the right direction.

As a logical developement, implement Compost pits, something along the lines of a tar kiln - they'd very slowly turn decayed organics put into them into Compost that could be then used to boost a plowed ground's tile productivity (in yield, growth speed or quality) for a period of time.

'This has been suggested a bunch of times and the only reason as to why it should be added is usually "muh realism"
