World Reset mechanics

Postby Chebermech » Sat Dec 31, 2016 10:59 pm

(this post is inspired by multiple pleads of no resets, but also a little different and has an actual idea on how to reach similar effect)

first of all Happy New Year! and second, would it be possible to have a world reset transition happen without an actual wipe? Lets pretend that the next world generation will create continent(s) and/or islands, and by the time for the next reset extend new generated map grids on the side with the new mechanics/changes where you can reach via the knars/boats. Give people 1 or 2 days for the migration and then submerge the previous map underwater, or just remove the old grids from the game into the abyss.

*if there won't be islands or continents, and map will be somewhat similar to what we are used to, just make a new extension in one of the directions for people to be able to move to on foot, and then remove the old segment of the map after some time.

**if there will be actual islands and/or continents, place lots of ocean in between new and old world, and make it difficult to find the "new world", set traps/obstacles on the way with big sea creatures that are extremely difficult or impossible to defeat and whirlpools or something of that kind, so people would have to send scouts first to find the place.

in case mechanics like qualities or overall quality balance need to be changed, then they would of course either have to be adjusted to a new system or all items be deleted except for the characters themselves who would appear naked after the world transition is finished after a server reset and maybe be adjust to the new system if needed. also make it impossible to build on the new server map until the transition is finished to prevent quality manipulation if needed.

here's an idea in thrown in pixels for easier visualization

So all the players get to pack up their botted-characters, all their botted-treasures, pack them into big ships, and then sail to a new continent?

I'll pass. You're taking away the best part about world resets, which is that everyone is on equal ground again! :D

well i'm talking about eventually when and if this game will get a lot more players who will not want to lose their progress every year. so this is just one of the fun ways the transition could happen, instead of keeping the same map, have the terrain reset but keep the characters and maybe even items they bring along with them. make the distance between worlds reasonable so everyone could reach within the time frame, and this time will probably be the most intensive pvp wise, as it will be the most vulnerable time for everyone.

I don't see the World Resets as a consequence of development but moreso a necessary part of the game. By the end of the world, the discrepancy between new and veteran players is too large to be closed. With a permanent world, eventually some faction would just become a death-squad patrolling the world and tearing down every sizable civilization they can find, carting off the riches to their megafortress. Because their skills are so much higher than everyone else's, there's nothing that can be done about it.

At least with resets, we can return to a point where people can join the game and at least potentially compete with the best players. After a few months, that's no longer possible.

Probably unbalanced as all fuck, and removes a part that is the only desired thing for many people about the game, hence why it probably won't happen, but I do like the idea a lot.
Specially how it does away with having to restart from scratch each world. +1

Some sort of mass exodus would be pretty cool. Everyone loading up into their dank knarrs and sailing off to the new world.

This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

Cute, but why?

one of many responses i've seen about pleading no world/progress resets. If you are planning on having larger audience, persistence would probably be something that would attract more people.

I personally think resets are fun, mainly because you have a chance to build a new base and provide shelter for you and your friends, but hopefully in the future that doesn't have to include character reset (only world reset), so this is one of the ways to do "soft resets" i thought could be fun and wanted to share.
