Underground areas with no mining supports allowed

Postby svino » Tue Oct 24, 2017 12:08 am

I noticed a lot of people think that mining without mining supports, avoiding cave ins is kind of a fun feature for a while. But of course mining with mining supports is way more efficient and safe.

What if there was a certain type of rock, or areas that left tiles where you cant build mine supports? I think it would both challenge bots, and it would spice up mining.

(Maybe it would be annoying for pave artists and underground village hermits though. )

To speak against the problem of having some areas unpaveable/buildable: Overground areas have some unbuildable areas too like rivers and snow. But yeah, they are more predictable, as you can clearly see them before you start planning your village.

I live underground and enjoy art paving but I still think this would be a cool feature, I mine a lot without supports, occasionally you get a cave in you can't predict but it is quite a fun game seeing how far you can get before you have to build a support. I also think it would have an effect on bots and be more of a challenge for the higher tier players who are always saying they want more danger. :)

But I do think, as azrid says, it should be restricted to the lower levels, I'd say L4 and 5. That way it wouldn't interfere with art pavings or village layouts and wouldn't make mining overly dangerous for newer players, they already have bats and slimes and mining is key to progression.

this is an interesting idea. I would support it if....

you slightly marked tiles when dust falls. So slightly changed the graphic of the tile permanently. I don't want paving tiles under dust to become required, that's how most people mine without supports at the moment.

Oh! Make little minesweeper flags that stack up to like 50. You just simply set down your little flag to mark a tile. These flags wouldn't have to be delegate solely to mining either, they could be super handy when trying to locate the center of a high quality node.

Recipe: 4 cloth, 8 sticks = 16 little flags. Preferably they'd be rather resilient to decay as well to help you designate unclaimed node locales. Maybe even be able to add a piece of cork to the flag to let it be used as a buoy? I'd kill to be able to mark the center of a water node semi-permanently. At the moment I usually just take a screen shot and line my self up with it. Same goes for clay nodes.

We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

this idea just sounds really unfun and like a bit of a hamper

maybe if it was an l5 and those particular areas were, in some way, more rewarding

(maybe pay-dirt nodes that can't be supported because they're more porous and would collapse regardless, causing less grevious damage and yielding particular rewards?)

IMO underground biomes would be cool, and something like 'shroom swamps' or 'crumbling abyss' which disallowed mine supports would be cool

Right now the underground is too simant

Why unfun? Most people who mine on level 5 just makes a straight line with a road attatched to it. Would be nice with something that forces you to break the habit i think.

But yes I agree it would be cool if those areas were more rewarding, and restricted to lower levels.
