Nobody uses that chat. I've probably seen more messages in the public chat since its release a few days ago than the entirety of the private one's lifespan. The noobs use it to ask questions since it's right there. I don't bother oathing half of my characters to the realm since it accomplishes nothing and is a waste of effort.
Going outside of your realm's borders for something and losing access to the chat is incredibly annoying, especially if you're right on its border.

I agree, you should be able to speak to your realm if your hearth fire resides in it.

Well, my anecdotal evidence points quite the opposite direction.
Personally, I just don't particularly want 50 different unique chats cluttering up my box.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not.
If there was a system of chat management similar to other MMOs that'd make it more tolerable. But we already have system, local, party, village, realm, realm P and an individual tab for each PM. I'd rather have the ability to consolidate specific chats into one tab, than a separate tab for each particular instance.
Honestly, a chat re-haul might be necessary at some point. It'd probably need a dedicated patch if they wanted to make something as flexible as the World of Warcraft chat. IE, customization colors, tabs and other such.

yea, its so dumb when you ask a question, then enter mine for like a minute to idk, refill the smelters, and then when you are back up you have no clue that you have missed all the answers
