Natural cave galleries.

Just stop these from happening.

All they do is cleave gold ore nodes randomly.

Agree.
Or atleast make the hole stop when it hits an ore node/tile.

I have no problem with them opening into undiscovered void, only when they open into already discoverd areas: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=45617

These have always been kind of anti-climactic, I'd love to see them actually precipitate something, contain something, etc. To in some way be either interesting, useful, or both.

Maybe a rare resource? An ore boulder? A cluster of cave centipedes or a Centipede dungeon?
jorb: I don't want *your* money. You are rude and boring. Go away.
Sevenless: We already know real life has some pretty shitty game mechanics, it's why we're here instead.
Avu: The end is near it has finally come to pass: I agree with Lunarius...
Shubla: There are also other reasons to play this game than to maximize your stat gain.

Nah they only exist so you can watch a few hundred black ore disappear.

I do actually really agree that cave galleries currently are absolutely pointless implementations that only cause frustration. They also make me unable to mine clean, big ol' squares the way I used to.

Jordancoles offered Jobr a good idea on stream - cave galleries will show something good in the end: monsters, chests, etc
Jorb confirmed that idea, so we just need to wait 2 years or so :)

Because in all of the big, no longer clean squares I have dug so far, I have always hit at least one cave gallery uglifying my borders. I would happily take screenshots for you if I still lived in these locations, but I'm talking very LARGE squares.
