Smoke the bees!

Shouldn't there be a way to passively collect bees without being stung, especially now since they can fly over water.

If you really want to make it less easy to collect wild bee stuff, perhaps the smoker could take pipeweed or any smokeable as fuel. And bars of any metal for construction.

I fail to see how this would make it more difficult. Sure, the first few days... but after that?

Some steel to make it, cloth/leather also, burns straw.. And you could use it to smoke off bees, reducing or eliminating the chance for them to sting you?

People would probably steal unclaimed smokers that have been left up trees, for one.

Edit: I still prefer "any common metal" instead of steel to make said smokers.

Steel is overkill copper or tin should be enough.

Excerpt from the SAS Survival Guide:

"During the day worker bees venture far from the nest, but all gather there at night. Then is the time to strike. Make a torch from a bundle of grass and hold it very close to the entrance so that the nest fills with smoke. Then seal the hole. That kills the bees, making an immediate meal, and making their honey safely available."

This would, obviously, kill the larvae though. Maybe it makes them totally harmless and easy to raid but only yields Odd Honeycombs?
Total misplay.

I'm not so sure about destroying any chance to get larva at all. Maybe half the chances of getting them instead if the hive is smoked out?

My inspiration for smoking the bees was reading how it was done in Swiss Family Robinsons, where the end result was the bees were evicted instead of being killed by the smoke.

hasn't this thread came up about once a months since the introduction of bee stings? Great idea, needs done now, but maybe if we could research and add to current suggestions rather than just repeating the same arugments?

Given bees have been domesticated almost as long as beer has existed... i'm not sure what they did that far back, but they did something to pacify the bees while honey and wax was collected.
