Fear of the dark,
Because why not

After 15-30 minutes without light your character is getting paranoid, fear builds up dealing new wound that reduces agi, int, str, maybe Buffs survival and will, as he panicly wants to stay alive

That would enforce fireplaces in mine, possibly reduce botting, surely piss off many players, and troll custom client users ( I use Ard's client and I love features but still, I would like that add-on to the game)

Thoughts?

Could this fear be reduced by the Will stat?

Fear of darkness sound like bad way for implementation penalty for being in darkness.
I think that could be better buff light sources usage rather than debuff people who not using them.

Prowny, if that would in come of a wound I don't think will should reduce its damage

Granger, in that link you came up with Jorb said it would be hard to enforce, if following my suggestion it could be implemented in following way

This damage can only occur in cave
This damage can be prevented by light sources
Light sources need to have radius, safe zone, like a mine supports
Fear kicks in only when outside safe zone for x time, multiplied by 1.25 per cave lvl [?]
Fear wounds are getting bigger as heartling is more paranoid, like a bee stings

Cave hermit is completely immune to fear of the dark effects

If anything then this.. rare occasion where I agree with fostik.

Also don't use stuff about bots and such as an argument because in reality script gets adapted once and shrug while the annoyance you bring to those who play fair is constant.

There isn't one, unless you come up with a better way. Unless they're required to actually have light people will continue to use lighthacks.

Buffing light would likely just mess up another part of the game with a pointless OP mechanic that was created because the devs couldn't bring themselves to do the right thing (which would be to fuck up the exploits used by cheaters from time to time, if needed by changing how things happen, in this case enforcing darkness through one or more out of the pleora of effective means that have been suggested to them over the years).

I like the idea of being attacked by monsters when you walk in the darkness. You can't fight back, but you can see them through the darkness.

The monster gives you a reference to tell if you are moving in the total pitch black, and is kinda cool.
