Different seasons across the map

Postby Agrik » Tue Sep 03, 2019 9:11 pm

Winter is a hard time for newbies to start. Almost no food, as there are no fruits neither foragebles, and even hard to find basically a string. And other technically available "food" often itself prefers to eat players. As I understand, most foragebles appear on real terrain only, not on the "Snow" terrain. Can we have berries and roots found under snow, btw? Can we have https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorbus_aucuparia (is it rowan or sorb apple ingame?) whose red berries endure being covered with snow and even become more edible after freezing?
But I digress, it isn't the point. We still have a week or two when it is really hard for newbies to start.

Maybe the world can be divided into two "hemispheres" experiencing opposite seasons? And then to limit the territory where new characters appear to the hemisphere currently with a spring or summer season. Because to start during autumn, with the winter coming soon, is not much fun, if one only starts to become acquainted with the game.

Another option is to make seasons circle around the center of the world. It will add to locality as well, the center being the preferred (and possibly contested!) location with only a tiny sector of winter moving around, while sturdy hermits in the further parts of the world will experience a winter 20 kilometers wide.

would just force people to have farming outposts to keep q grinding going during winter. Huge amounts of extra tedium.

i agree to the problem (no forage items in winter). would rather see winter specific forage items and ice fishing, etc.

This game is so unfriendly to beginners and noobs that one week of winter when they start is really not much to add to their sufferings!

I agree that winter needs some love, but I also have to say that the austerity of the season is one of its charms.

I do not dispute austerity. It is totally cool. Nor I think the game is unfriendly (maybe, except for the unexplained controls).

I wanted to say that some crucial resources for newcomers seem to be not just scarce, but nonexistent when the territory is fully covered with snow, if I'm right in my observations that forageables, including taproot and nettle, never spawn on snow at all. This is somewhat alleviated by the short duration of winter, yes... but still leaves the possibility for some unlucky newcomers to be repelled by the fact that they are unable to make anything for days.

If I'm not mistaken, even animals tend not to give birth in the time of year when it's hard to find anything edible for them.

Winter is, indeed, absurdly difficult. I had the misfortune of starting up again right as winter began; and I have no idea how i'm supposed to cope or even do anything until spring/summer.

Had I not had friends to start with, I'm not sure i'd even be able to get to where I currently am- and I managed to start a day or two before fall.

Seeds and fruits are gone: This means a HUGE portion of discovery LP is locked until summer (Please: Make winter not delete them, and make them return in spring, not summer). Taproots and nettles are very rare in winter, especially as more of the map becomes sweeping waves of white: Without these, you can't even start the game- I didn't get a farm up, so most of my string comes from scavenging dead villages. I can't imagine how a brand new player will be able to construct basic things such as clothing or many buildings without these sources.

Digging is absolute hell; I've completely given up on leveling my place, as I can't possibly level all of it in one day (big projects), and every time I return after sleep or a break, the entire ground is coated in white, meaning that I have to tile-by-tile dig everything up.

I'm barely capable of feeding myself; the only reason I can is because of fishing and because i'm barely combat capable- a new player can't even grab string, meaning fishing would be hard for them to start (thank god they dont need to discover it). I had to completely halt certain attributes; I can't forage for a lot of food each day, meaning I can't raise the attributes. I've never missed blueberry pies so much in my life.

Not to mention that many forageable curios are missing now- boletes and whatnot are rare, and I can't get a stable supply of decent curios anymore- especially as I can't craft any at this stage of progression.

Winter is hell. Please fix. The only reason i'm even playing right now is because my subscription is still ticking down, even though I honestly can't do a single thing beyond mining currently (I can't even progress my damned credos, and won't until summer!!! Can the quest system at least become seasonal too, so that impossible quests aren't generated?)

expand ice fishing/hunting, make it a season explicitly for those two pastimes (along with sitting in your snowy cabin relaxing)
