2 Potential Credo Reworks

Postby jordancoles » Fri Aug 20, 2021 11:01 am

So I have 2 ideas for improving the credo experience.

The first idea is one I've suggested in the past which is to essentially merge credo quests with the numen system. Rather than being assigned a random list of tasks as you are now, you would be assigned 3 groups of tasks. The first 2 options could be completed to progress further in the credo. The 3rd option if completed would work as a reset/skip for your current credo task. Completing the 3rd task would reroll your 3 quest options without progressing or moving backwards in your credo progress.

The second idea is a little more detailed, but I think that it would make for a better system overall. I propose that the current quest levels/quests-per-level system be removed in favour of a new, point system. Say you need to reach 100 points to complete your first credo, 110 for your second, and so on.

Every credo would provide the player with a long list of potential tasks, each with their own weight in points.
Example for the hunter credo:
-Kill a boar x10 (2 points each)
-Flay a large animal x20 (1 point each)
-Catch a mallard duck x5 (1 point each)
-Etc.

Ideally, there would be more tasks and points than are required to complete the credo so that you can pick and choose the route that you would like to take while doing tasks that would ideally be building onto the main idea of whatever credo you're working on. So, actually hunting for the hunter credo. Getting points for catching "big catches" for the fisher credo rather than skipping fishing quests entirely. etc.

I think that this second system would be more enjoyable overall because it gives the player more freedom to progress how they please while doing tasks that may actually help them or contribute to something that they're already doing (like hunting large animals, or collecting certain curios). It would remove rng and tactical dice-roll abandons for easier quests.

I really like the second idea. Just a list of things you can grind out when you whenever you got time. As opposed to the current setup of "Sigh... Got to go 30 minutes away by boat to find a mole and hope it has a mole's claw to study. Maybe I should just reroll it... Oh look, now I need to do something that is 10 times worse."

I've always viewed credos as something you could work towards through actions. Want to be a master fisherman? Go fish. Want to become a lumberjack? Plant a variety of trees and make things with variable wood types.

I think that the long list of tasks would give people the ability to grind out credos in that way without creating 1 or 2 easily bottable tasks that become the meta for each credo (like making 1000 buckets, or whatever)

First idea feels like it would be just as bad as the current system. Let's say the 2 progression options you roll are timegated/impossible for the time being, now you're grinding the reset/skip quests like you would in the current system abandon and hope for easy shit. Minor improvement not having to go backwards, but otherwise just as bad.

Second idea could have some potential.

I prefer the second option over the first. I think it could actually give certain items a reason to be studied passively while you are working on a credo. Study a beaver tail while you are cutting logs, that way you know you'll be able to finish the credo when you log on tomorrow cause you just cut down x amount of trees.

I think certain things should be time gated though.
I.e. for miner, I shouldn't be able to go inbetween mine levels over and over to bust it out within 5 minutes.
You could almost have a timer on those like you do the exp events. This way you can mine out a bunch of x ore, but you know in a day or so you can travel down the mine shaft and finish a credo.

Along with that, you could make the number required for certain things go up the more they are used.
So kill 10 boar, could go up to say 15 if you want to repeat it.

I agree with the 2nd Idea.

The "Talk with Tree/Stone" quest should require a trigger. I wouldn't like to get a credo and then get bombarded with UI hints of all the trees I could talk to for the quest. A button beside the "Talk with Tree" would do fine but I think it would be cool if it needed Hearth Magic or something like that. Like making a "Woodland Spirit" artifact that when burned in any fire would whisper the location of a tree for the quest.
If I could I would heal and help people, but in this realm I can't...Wait...elixirs? *Dons Plague Doctor mask*
