Accept Current Combat

Accept current combat system as the last iteration and start adding some more depth.
As a way to balance all the new moves that would be added just use the elegant method of rotating cards like in any modern good online card game.
Balance issues become smaller if you switch up the card base every so often.

We had that when the card system was first introduced and it didn't play well. I didn't do much combat back then so someone else can probably explain better, but constantly having to track which cards were in your hand while also paying attention to everything else, while also having your controls change every time (because the cards were in different positions every time), was just too confusing and annoying.

Also, you say it like it's a small thing, but having the cards rotate instead of always just displaying the same 10 cards would be a significant combat system overhaul. You're actually proposing to greatly change current combat.

That being said, I disagree with the core idea that combat should not get any radical changes. 'Run away/chase for fucking ages' is not a fun system so if there's a good way to fix that such a change would be welcome. But the devs have already spent tons of time trying all kinds of things for the combat system with mixed results, so I think their time is better spent on things that do clearly improve the game, leaving the current combat in its 'I guess it works, mostly' state with only minor tweaks when necessary.

Just do that and leave it. The forums are blissfully silent about combat compared to previous systems. Adding depth is still capable of breaking the system that works right now.

I think why people fight is more important.

Hey have you ever participated in real PvP? Genuine question.

If you mean the kind where you aren't greatly outstatted and/or getting ganked 3v1, then no. >95% of player's haven't. But the majority have at least been on the receiving end of the 'endless chase' version, so that's a part where most players would benefit from an improvement.

Combat feels like it's in a "really" good spot, but I have a percentage of other players time, and a fraction of a fraction of pvp engagement. PvP will ALWAYS make people want something.. different, something they feel is a bit more fair, something slower, less punishing, more punishing, etc. Evolving the current combat would be a good thing, but it feels like it's in a good place.

If we're speaking of "endless chase" it's only the factionbois who experience it because both sides are actually trying to fight, but fighting head on with no movement would be highly disadvantageous. Thus one side chases and one escapes, then it switches when they try to engage, and so on, and so on. You alone trying to run away isn't the phenomenon you're talking about. Also if you can't run away then either you're doing something wrong or you're KOd already.

Of course, I'm not saying the "endless chase" is a bad thing. It separates the shitty fighters from the good fighters. Don't try to influence the combat if you aren't even fighting.

Silence because there are two groups of thought about the combat system and neither is going to alter the opinion of the other; one group says the system is clunky and non-intuitive, the other deems it simple and effective. If anyone devises a system that will satisfy both groups I'm sure the devs would love them.

As to why people fight (in the game), only two reasons - hunting or mindless violence against other players.
