I know that's part of the game but I would be more likely to invest real world money if I didn't dread my character being slaughtered and robbed. I'm more of a peaceful player. Even a second server to allow for non PVP would be an option.

True that is irritating, and I would like a peaceful world also (more social interaction, trading, exploring, etc. ....there are plenty of ways to get killed in this game without worrying any other player you see will kill you just because you are there), but this game isn't exactly "permadeath" as advertised. If/when you get killed just start a new character and inherit from the old, you will spawn at their hf, own everything they owned, and have around 60% of their abilities and stats (find and bury them and get even more). So "death" is just a temporary setback to your progress.
Learn to keep an eye on the mini-map (keep it zoomed in so you can see icons) and hearth home if it seems prudent. Get a pali up as soon as possible; learn about visitor gates and slave keys. Never publicly divulge your location. Never meet with anyone you don't know, except at a market. I'd say 95% of the people you encounter in the game are friendly, most will be just as wary as you, but you never know when that other 5% is there; "better safe than sorry".
In the past four worlds I was attacked only once by another player (only KO'd), killed by animals three times (wolverine, lynx, and bear).
