Proper camera mode UI

Postby vatas » Mon Feb 10, 2025 11:45 am

Currently, the other camera modes are basically hidden. I consider this a major problem because I think I can argue that the default camera mode ("ortho" locked into 4 angles) is the objectively worst camera mode. It presumably attempts to imitate the isometric view of the 2d Legacy" Haven but only succeeds in making the control scheme clunkier. Telling people to :cam bad used to be standard, I personally like :cam ortho -f but problem with both is that they require a console command that can be extremely confusing for a first-time user to figure out. (You need to make sure you have no windows selected, know that typing : is both part of the command and brings up the console.)

My suggestion is to update the "day of time" widget to have an outer ring around it, a compass indicator of sorts, for the camera direction. If you want to keep the current default camera, give it markers on the NW-SE-SW-NE corners that indicate those four positions. Outer ring either skips between them (when default camera is on) or unlocked (for ortho freemode) and can even "disassembled" a bit to enable the "bad camera."

Loftar's gonna die on the "bad camera unsupported" hill (even though mountains literally make it the better camera), and you know it

Personally I constantly have troubles with aligning actual camera view to the minimap. Like, what is the current orientation/rotation of my camera?
Probably, it's just my "ImageIntelligence 10" problem.

Anyway thought it would be cool to have camera position pointer:

I remember seeing some angle indicator in some game(s), though this would still be just another band-aid for this dogshit camera

Having this "view frustum projection" for any camera might be quite handy regardless

Even a simple "floaty direction pointer" to north Image would help me personally with camera orientation

Simple & Elegant. +++

At a fixed (user adjustable) position though. So there is no need to search for it like with those, floating around all the time, quest pointers.

I agree with :cam ortho -f being the best of the cameras.
One thing not mentioned is that f you change the view elevation angle, especially with zooming out, you see clearly just a square of terrain with just blackness past the edge of the view range. I would love it if this effect were to be mitigated with some mistiness, or something. This is the main reason I don't use lower viewing angles. Totally kills the immersion.
