For me as a hermit romping around with taproots and spruce caps the levels are fine. If we are to change it we should do so because it on the whole would promote a more sensible environment to do so.

One alternative would be to make the berry/fruit forageables less intensely terrible XD Hermits have plenty of food to eat, but it basically kills their stat gain if they eat any of it.
With an upped value of easy to find food, hermits wouldn't have much trouble getting going and wouldn't need that 300%. It's also more difficult for "lets just jump into the game!" types to absolutely ruin their stat gains in early game.
