The problem with this is that after the animal stops and you aggro it from melee range, it runs full speed from you again. Granted, I haven't tried it that many times because I cba chasing after them, but are you even able to get a punch in before they run away?

The only retarded thing about hunting is how easy it is. It's like "oh you need meat? brb 1 min" *gets in boat*.

Should not be able to 1 shot half the animals from the very start, that just seems wrong.

Personally i don't mind neither the fact that animals run, nor those oneshots happening. You know, it's a freakin arrow in your body, you gonna die sooner or later. But the fact, that after they start running away you have no means of keeping up or tracking them is annoying and needs to be fixed.
Also, some sucker-punches, or ambush attacks could be added, when you hit someone instantly by initiating the fight, if you're standing next to them. Probably that would help those, who insist on hunting in melee. Oh, and attack that slows down the animal to walking, or crawling speed. Cutting into a leg with a sharp object for example. Also, some simple early-game weapons like maces, and simple spears that increase significantly damage despite this 1 point in melee, etc. There is a lot of means, that may help and make noob characters non-completely defensless, if devs want to implement them. Why shouldn't more or less new character 1-2 days in be able to melee down fox or badger in a normal battle with his mace. They don't seem to be as vicious and mutated as bats are. But I'm going off topic.

We could have shots and attacks that reduce the speed of an animal aka legshots. Hunting in UnrealWorld works like that, but they also leave tracks there, which is nice.

Blood trails would be neat, have already been suggested. Visible wounding would be nice too.

Overall I'm not experiencing that much difficulty with hunting.

If you have to do this to hunt they might as well bring back boat hunting.

If you have to do what? Have blood trails and visible signs of an injured animal?

If anything it gives them cause to have the animals run FARTHER. Instead of just having them flee until deaggro, have them flee until their stamina drops. Injured animals would have a longer despawn rate than uninjured animals, and it also leads to all sorts of interesting options.

1 - Burrowing animals flee towards a den that doesn't spawn onto the map until they're fleeing. Interesting curios can be found here.
2 - Tracking animals across distances means they can give animals more meaningful HP, and the game of the hunt now becomes one of the chase (Which it always should be if you fail your first shot)
3 - Bears and Boars generally fight until the death... If you've ever seen one of these animals enraged, they don't quite as a rule.
4 - Speaking of Boars - Can we have a boar spear introduced maybe?

I've always felt that there should never be a point where fighting a boar or bear becomes a trivial thing. These are the grandmasters of combat in nature, and killing them shouldn't be something that's in reach of just ANY hunter.

Boars will literally run themselves up a spear to get at you when they're angry enough, and a single swipe from a bear can fell a horse with broken bones in the right circumstances.

So frankly, it'd be nice to see animal hunting get a Fix. But in a way that makes it more interesting, more challenging, and more focused on the 'thrill of the hunt' and less on the 'boom headshot' aspect.

Sevenless: We already know real life has some pretty shitty game mechanics, it's why we're here instead.
Avu: The end is near it has finally come to pass: I agree with Lunarius...
Shubla: There are also other reasons to play this game than to maximize your stat gain.
