So I took an inventory full of soil (minus two slots for the firebrand and two slots for my keyring and flask) and loaded a coal into my crucible. Then I performed the following steps:

I think you still need to light the torch.

Fill up fireplace, light once to build up max heat.
Use the Light My Fire command once refilled to full.
Use torch.
???
No more firebrands forever.

Seriously, its not that hard to fill up a fireplace and build up heat and maintain it for a long time.
W3 to W6 - Blockland. Special mentions: New Avalon, Tarn of Hotdog, Red October.
W7 - Elvenia, til we all got lazy.
W8 - Cult of R'lyeh, til the deeps called us back.
W9 - Tartarus, til death/wizards came for the land itself.
W10 - ???, ruined and forgotten.

Where are the hordes who wanted Haven to be harder last world in the suggestions? Guess what it is. Be careful what you ask, you may just get it.

It can be annoying but be patient.

I don't mind taking a long time to light a fire. What I don't like is that random mechanism, where you may fail to light the fire. I don't think it adds anything to the game, and it's not fun. I would prefer to just increase the time it takes but at least be successful every time. that is just my personal opinion though.

And, I doubt that failing to light a fire makes the game "harder". It just makes it annoying.

And ok, filling a fireplace is a workaround for this problem, but it is still not an excuse for this unfun random mechanism to exist.

This isn't what makes the game "harder." I believe you mean "trivial"

One firebrand used per day is that much of a problem? Once your fire is lit it's trivial to keep lit, and then torches suffice after. That one light makes up maybe 5% of my total lighting actions.

Is there currently any light source that lasts for more than 12 hours without attendance?

While people are pointing out the godsend that torches are, they weren't in at the start, only firebrand. Much pain
