Well, I think it is at least fair to say that if one wants to "fix" the firebrand, the proper solution is to add more advanced fire-starter devices, rather than to make the firebrand itself more lenient.

The big step up from rubbing sticks by hand is the bow drill.

It does not use metal.

This is why I suggested a tinderbox with flint, striker (iron or steel) and a refillable quantity of tinder. Items eligible to refill the tinderbox's number of "charges" could be birch bark, hay, plant fibers, and whatever else you feel would be appropriate.

Obviously sticks don't visually indicate what type of tree they came from, but it's possible that they do have a hidden value for it. Just thinking, because I have had a firebrand burn down on me before I was able to light something literally only twice since the beginning of the world. Could just be luck, or there could be more behind this than is evident.

I had no problems yesterday using spruce wood, and every problem today using the exact same log.

The time variation is like the difference between burning down a house and blowing it up.

It is not a terrible mechanic, but you cannot currently avoid it entirely and 3 or 4 failures in a row is not uncommon. The process then becomes: Ugh, okay, drink, wait... hit enter, wait.......... right click... damn it. How's my energy? Okay, drink, wait... hit enter, wait......... right click... FUCK! Repeat ad nauseum if you are especially unlucky.

That is not game design, that is lazy RNG hell.

Still gotta light it, no?

I could give excuses, but it is of course the correct choice for now.

Well I guess I might be biased from the big city life. There are always fires burning somewhere to light your torch on.
