You are assuming that all non-ranging murders are banditry. What if someone steals from my Salt node, I catch him in the act, he flees, and I chase him down and kill him on unclaimed land? I killed a criminal, but I still left a murder scent. Should someone be able to kill me in response without me being able to do anything about it or avenge myself?

An execution is when a society determines one of its members must die for their acts. I am not part of whatever social group wants me dead for wronging them; for them to kill me is either a murder or an act of war.
