That being said, though, I guess I should add that I think performance should be a very small problem in the case of cupboards, since they are virtually always indoors and therefore 1) not in that large numbers, and 2) not competing with a lot of other stuff for render time. So out of all the containers, cupboards may actually be a fairly good candidate for variable materials.

I think you should consider the horrifying mismatched cupboards that will be produced if you did this.

I can only shudder in fear thinking of all the different-looking cupboards every home will have now...

Just for the record, we have strongly considered also making palisades and brickwalls take materials after their ingredients.

idk if loftar or armok is a better god at being cruel

and i honestly think it'll be every 2-3 cupboards being the same depending on how many boards/log. so maybe it'll be inherently organizing
early game it might be a mess but those with ocd or enough time would replace the cupboards once they get into forestry.
now that flat cupboard mod might get used less or there will come a mini cupboard mod for aesthetics

Could be nice to have an option to show everything in "generic" material.

That would actually be cool if you only made it matter in the initial cornerpost

This. My mind would be unable for finding once my wall is not uniform. And doing some delay of walls construct for an aesthetic is a game loss choice since wall is very important.
