Buildings burn down. Campfires and sticks that are on fire go out.

Maybe it's more of a regional thing. But if I have a stick that's on fire and it burns until all the fuel is used, the flame goes out. The stick burns down whereas the fire burns out.

Burns out is fine. Just means your firebrand is apparently like a candle and started burning at the top and slowly burns down towards your hand. :)
