On topic; Saying that a (camp)fire "burns down" sounds better and makes more sense than saying it "burns out", which would be more appropriate for things like candles and light bulbs.

A torch will burn out, no? It is in same class as a candle in my mind. This firebrand is like a torch more than a campfire.

Maybe it's more of a regional thing. But if I have a stick that's on fire and it burns until all the fuel is used, the flame goes out. The stick burns down whereas the fire burns out.

Burns out is fine. Just means your firebrand is apparently like a candle and started burning at the top and slowly burns down towards your hand.
