Gross, sure. Something someone would do? definitely. Let me point you at all the ritualistic clothing of various mystics, shaman, and other practitioners of the mystical arts.

Gross is in eyes of looker. Old civilization will do many things we can think are gross. People in other country can do thing I think is gross. But it is not to them.
