Maybe add a buildable wooden frame structure that can hold a much larger amount of metal/coal. Same for water really(water tower).

This. With the ability to use wheelbarrows to fill/take from it, preserving the quality of the items (don't care if FIFO or LIFO) in the stockpile structures (no averaging).

Any item that is only a single tile large, and is meant to be stockpileable, should have a limit of 65 or higher.

Any less, and why bother to stockpile when you can make cupboards instead?

- game aesthetics. Cupboards in a cave level outside of houses are ugly.
- cupboards require building them or transporting.
- it is good for the game if it'll be less tedious

+! perhaps even made in 2 different configurations 1 from wood for stock piles up to 1000 with a 2x2 grid profile, and 1 made from hard metal with a 4x4 grid profile used for log storage of 20, with a viewing window for checking individual qualities of the logs held within.
