Some noob isn't going to wear 4-gilded pants, just someone trying to disguise as a noob. Gilding is just retarded, the gear people are wearing gives no indication to their gear level. If anything it gives reason to attack everyone you see because you don't know how good their equipment is until you take it from them.

IIRC, according to Jorb, that was one of the intended results, and I agree with him on this: you shouldn't be able to deduce conclusive information about a character from what he's wearing. Otherwise, you might as well demand to make character stats and skills public claiming that not being able to see the exact numbers is "retarded".
