subtokens are kinda ingame currency ... (which are bought from jorb and loftar) ... you can pay any service ingame with ...
and protection service had been paid for ingame since long ... not massive and visibly like nowadays but service like giving workforce or just informations about the area and ongoings (besides being a hermit and have steady going trades with a bigger faction which relies on your steady supplies) which prolly is an OK thing ... on the other hand "forced protection" is also not new ... ask the Russians and Ukranians that left the game in W4
