I often wonder if its that reasoning that holds this game and its combat back. We all say we love permadeath and that chance to lose everything, but do we really?
Maybe it would be better for combat and the games long term population if we retained more of our stats, and the punishment for death was shifted into different areas.
People may cry heresy at the thought of timegating a character after he dies, but I'm starting to feel like that might be what we need. If you disagree with a time gate then I must ask what you consider losing your stats to be other than a more elaborate time gate. Most people stop playing after a significant loss, because that feels like the only option after you've had your hard work snatched away. That threshold for a lot of people is just the loss of their hearthling, and some sort of time delay on the return of the majority of their stats feels like a possible solution. The stats could even not return at all unless you complete a quest that is only available once a day. Each time you complete the quest 5% of your old stats can return. This would have to account for any stats they gain in the meantime of course. Would have to weight the stats somehow.
Idk I don't feel like thinking this idea out more. TLDR, maybe permadeath isn't right for us.
