Sorry, misread. Thought one could access the barrel while in rack - which would be nice, maybe they could be at least intractable with buckets and the like?

+1
Also with variable wood types and food variation, wine could be aged on the racks in certain barrels.

Unless jorb wants to edit every barrel so every content item is displayed on the lid, barrels would have to stack vertically instead. and that would be about ~50 barrels. otherwise, its a nifty idea.

Why would he need to? I understand it would be to label them but if you load an item into a cart or wagon you do not see the item, so if you load a barrel into the rack than it would just be shown as a barrel with nothing in it.

If that's the case, I don't see the point. the purpose of barrels is to store a commodity in bulk, that you can easily recognize without rifling through each barrel. without the label, might as well just use the cupboard model for the barrel rack

Cool idea, +1. Only thought is that they should be movable if empty.

I would love this in game, would make a brewery or winery look right even among other things, plus handy storage ish cool.

yes I did mean it to be wood blocks and have updated my post. I was playing another game not long ago where the more or less same thing was referred to as logs. But the suggested "possible" material costs were just speculation on what they could potential cost to craft. I understand how a simple rack could be constructed in real life, but i'd have to point out that this isn't real life and we already have prime examples of odd material costs on certain items.

Would be nice to allow color coding of barrels in general I suppose. Identifying barrels on the lids could be a viable solution. But also understand that various barrels have "spill over" around the lids which would look odd with the barrels sideways, which is why i opted for generic barrels in my mock up.

I figure it would work like wagons, carts and i'm assuming cheese racks work in a similar way (idk I've never made one yet).

Cool idea, I like it a lot.

Maybe we could attach keg spouts?? They'd only work if the barrel's holding a liquid.
berry nice to see you
