I disagree, large ships have been around for a good long while historically - even then, Haven is not solely rooted in historical context.
Big ships could be really, really cool. I think Loftar really wants Object Controlled Objects before anything like this could see actual play, though I honestly think it could be feasibly worked around.
If big ol' ships like this functioned like a house that could move, with various stairs and floors, then some of the stairs in the center of the ship could send you 'above deck' onto a pre-determined point of the ship similar to how hearthlings are placed upon a Knarr. Being seated on the ship and right clicking on it gives the option to enter the ship if you have a key(? Maybe, seems risky with how keys work. Maybe if you're in the party with the driver). The helmsman seat can only be accessed from inside the ship by exiting a door from the 'captains quarters' level. If someone else tries to exit the door while the seat is taken it doesn't let them, they have to exit via the main stairs.
With the newer updates on how Wagons can post up and claim a small section of land for some meagre safety, a big ship like this could do the same - but only in shallow sea water. A ship this big would be slow in rivers like the Knarr is, perhaps moreso.
