Characters should be attached a little bit more firmly to carts (meaning: not let go of them unless RMB'ing the cart) for convenience when moving these in tighter spots anyway.

I totally agree with the rowboat thing. Leaving theft scent when you take stuff from a manned boat should be a thing. If you are in same party this wouldnt apply maybe.
Also, destroying a boat while somebody is in it should be counted as vandalism.

All for using rope on a vehicle to secure your cargo.

Also all for thievery and vandal scents for manned carts and boats so I can block gates and natural resources to harvest them without people trying to interrupt me

Marginal. Won't change. I get that this is a bitch when it happens, but keeping and maintaining this mechanic for all vehicles is a bit of work, and there are also a lot of strange cases. What if someone steals my boat? It would then be nice if I could steal the stuff back from the boat, &c&c.

Lots of question, marginal situation.

that's why my original suggestion was to be able to tie down the cargo with rope, making it a decision on the part of the player, I don't think it's necessary to make it a criminal act for the reason you provided, but it would be nice to have a method to protect against somebody just instantly stealing your cargo.

Maybe you should implement a new mechanic that is same for all vehicles, which would allow players to own boats and other vehicles, control rights for them. (Vandalism, theft, tresspassing) Kind of like claim, but only effected area is the vehicle itself.

Could you not attach it to the same mechanic that considers a lifted item still tied to a certain character when dropped on a claim, or a horse for that matter?

Yeah, I think this would be a good solution. a 3 second timer + a rope to 'tie down' an object. would at least take the thief (and you) 3 seconds to unpack the cargo, gives you enough time to get away from the would-be thief

If the problem is abstracted properly, it's not a big issue in code maintenance that I can see. maybe I'm wrong. maybe it'll need a huge rewrite to get to this point. (I also know what loftar thinks of the object oriented paradigm.)

As far as I care, the boat is "owned" as long as I'm the one driving it. When I leave, it's not mine. OR you can do like the knarr and the first person to put a lock on it... Something like that, maybe.

Destroying an occupied water vehicle should be vandalism imo, kind of shitty you can literally murder someone with no repercussions/scents
