With the removal of personal beliefs miner/smith was an non existant character build because anyone with strength could do it efficiently, aka any throw away combat alt.
It put quality caps on the entire tech tree into the metal industry, you need masonry for good clay now, you need masonry for good bricks and stones, and thus, good kilns and forges, which in turn makes good metals.
With the nerf to black coal in mines you can't get good fuel from level 1 anymore, so you're more reliant on farmers for wood anyway, were before you could just use low quality boughs and high quality metals made from uber forges (mammoth bone clay at quality 100 with no skill caps ment you can immediately get uber forges with no skills or attributes) thus it slows down the progression of the metal industry, and honestly, anything that stops excessively high quality gains is a good thing for the game as a whole, do we really need 2 week old characters after a new world start with quality 100 swords and armors killing newbies?
Masonry lets us dwarf loving players dig our holes and get the shiny things and give us something to trade for food and gear with goods that can no longer be gained by a combat/miner alt with high str.
Also in general, having more well rounded characters being required for the general tech tree of the game isn't bad, and we can still specialize in certain areas, just not dump everything into one stat on an alt and log in to craft our pants/crops/food, anything that nerfs the number of alts needed to stay relitively high tier quality wise is a good thing.
