Is it perhaps too easy to build cairns in comparison to how hard it is to destroy them? Would it be better if, say, similar to village idols cairns were inactive and destructible the first 24 hours or so?

Maybe some sort of administration mechanic for realms?

Like any part of the realm that is a certain distance away from the realm start needs an administration office. A realm might need a hearthling to make a periodic physical journey (ie no hearthfire or far travel) to each office (maybe like once a month per office) to give the realm's orders and keep sovereignty over the land.

If they don't, then bonuses start going away and the realm claim maybe starts to decay.

Larger square lands would be naturally more efficient than tendrils spilling out.

You'd have to have outposts to protect those offices so that would be something you would need to maintain if you want a big realm.

Could even have disconnected pieces of realms to act as like colonies maybe.

I would like this idea, if the cairn didn't show the area it "will" cover while in this downtime period. Otherwise tracking them down to their center would be too easy (at early stages of world).

Or, building a cairn should cost kingdom auth, the cost is dependant on how much cairns the kingdom already has built. Would solve most issues naturally, like realms expanding way too fast and it won't be so easy to spam them. Remove the delay and make them cost auth.

I like this more. It's a simple solution. And it makes sense: a kingdom has to have power to assert their claim. It could help regulate expansion to a more standard rate.

Before any of this we should be able to see realms on the map or something.
