Possibly could be more fun if there was more reward for it which I don't think really includes permadeath although the game seems to abound with sociopaths that get a kick from knowing they have caused someone else misery. Maybe an alternative form of xp that you only get through combat that gives access to other abilities?

Would be quite difficult to implement in a non-botable/exploitable way though, would require that you couldn't get xp from fighting the same person again and again and that the combat level of the character was factored in to how much you got.

One thing I think should happen is the current set of cards should be reworked to scale differently to different attributes.

For example: a restoration based on blocking with a shield should be based on str, or have a quick stab based on dex, or initiative generating skills based on will or int

This way even characters who aren't purely hunters/warrior alts can have some way of fighting and defending themselves.

This would just change the optimal stats needed for the best deck, and every time a combat patch comes out you would likely have to raise stats you haven't, to become strong again in the best deck available. meh

I like this idea...it could be fun, farmers defending themself with a scythe and so on....:D fun.
Of course warriors, archers, etc... should be more effective and stronger at high stats...but let's say a supreme farmer should be able to compete with a medium warrior trying to steal his stuff....fun :D

No. No, just no. Scythes cannot be used in combat unless you had Herculean strength or the enemy was retarded with flesh made of play doh.

I'm not going to argue that Scythes are a good weapon (as they lack any ability to correctly parry, are dangerously bad at blocking, are the halfborn child of a spear and a sword and have the grip position you wouldn't want on any weapon), but if you're honestly trying to assume that getting mowed down or hit from above with one while not having armor on wouldn't hurt, you're clearly not thinking of how dangerous any piece of metal with a sharp edge is.

Hell, most Farmers didn't even have Scythes back in the day and then would use rather a pitchfork (literal shit tier) or an axe/hammer instead.

Salem combat is cancer. As bad as it might be, Haven's combat is still lightyears ahead of Salem's.

That's all I could think whenever someone mentions it. The community hated it back then almost unanimously, is it nostalgia or did it get better after I quit?

IMO main problem with Salem combat was how it locks your movement while attacking, so like half the time you're fighting you can't actually control your character which makes the whole system feel super clunky. If there's one thing I liked about it it's directionality of attacks (ie hitting the back does more damage than hitting the front), which I think can easily be ported into Haven's current system.
