If the bone type was tracked so there were "bones" as a general crafting category and then "chicken bones," "cow bones," "mammoth bones," etc, having varying amounts would be doable. Diversifying such a thing may be why it was decided against at the time as it would require the reimplementation of the systems that would be involved in it.
