Yeah, something like this.
Make exploration a thing.
Biomes that require some conditions for you to visit them. Hot/cold, tools/dresses, climbing skills, stamina, fighting skills and so on ....
Exploration is one of the first things a new player want to know about. And right now, being the map so flat and a new player able to go wherever he wants doesn't give him the challenge to progress in the game, to discover new areas.

P.S. Also foods recipes may give you some buffs ... watch the new Zelda. Water melon keep you "fresh" for a while, and so on ...
Make friends with the other crabs or try to escape the bucket.
