People who would use such a feature are makers of paving-art and people who would want to brag. And for them it won't really matter how Really Cool (TM) it looks, it just have to look different from other options. It probably doesn't reduce the general pointlessness much but among functionally pointless ideas this one is not too bad.

Hmm, I don't think that's the main effect I'd want. I'm not entirely sure just what it is that I'd want, but I have a vague idea. I might explore it on my own sooner or later.

Surely those are the exact people who actually do care that it looks really good. Why would you brag about something that isn't even particularly special?

Prior to sketchbooks changing variable materials, it was fun to make stone-expensive structures out of gold/silver ores, or seeing someone who had a silk knarr sail. You knew someone spent a lot of something valuable on that.

Anyway though, doesn't metal paving have a glare on it compared to stone paving? Couldn't a similar treatment be given to gemstone pavings/buildings? Or is that effect not easily applied to non-terrain textures?

It is special because its showing the effort spent, as jotun gems are not that common to spend them without care. Looks are not irrelevant but secondary. After all, if one wanted to see something visually really cool client/textures modification is always available.

lol. Apart from inventory item mods, I'm still not sure I'll live to see the day when a client modification does something that actually looks visually good.

Indeed, but it is only supporting the assumption that no one mainly plays this game for striking visuals.

Even assuming that is true, that doesn't exactly sound like a good reason for not trying to improve on them. Rather the opposite.
