You can't make the game difficult for vets. You're a vet and so anything that should be difficult for new players (people who don't know the system) is going to not be because you know the game. Anything that is difficult even for vets is going to be a flat noob crusher.

is there something wrong with having a noob crusher? i mean, you can simply port home now, its not like it used to be where some boar stomps ur guts out on the shore lol. The beaver dams are already simply that, and with each addition of dungeons, they will continue to be hapless noob crushers.

Well, we have bears, trolls, and walruses... pretty noob crushing already, I think. Anything bigger than a fox is already dangerous to a new character. I'm just saying that making things difficult just for difficulty sake is more ultra-elite tier level game design. I'm just not sure it has place in open world gaming, unless we're talking a game that purely focuses on PvE. I know some people think otherwise. Different opinions can be good. :D

I've been playing a lot of a particular ARPG lately, and the developers keep on cranking up the difficulty on end-game additions, but the vets still just waltz right through it in a matter of a few weeks like it was almost easy mode. That's more the point I'm making. Once you know the game, a designer can make it harder and harder and harder, but it's not really getting any harder for the vets. It's the tiger chasing its tail.

Allegedly this happened with Everquest. Hardcore guild called Legacy of Steel was always first to clear new content and was vocal minority of the game being too easy/lacking end-game content. This caused developers to focus on making hard end-game content that eventually drove away the casuals.

More on-topic, snapping turtle could possibly be the most fitting swamp monster if one were to be implemented.

Legacy of Steel wasn't the only guild like this. There was one on most of the EQ servers, but there were about a half dozen to dozen "power servers" that Verant were watching closely because these players were always looking for ways to cheat the game. Same thing holds true in ever other MMO. Even EVE hasn't been immune to it with it being focused on the PvP and open world facets.

I understand the argument that mastery of game mechanics interferes with increasing difficulty, and maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that more dungeons would be the best solution for balance between vets and newbies. You have to enter a specific area, so newer players wouldn't get flattened over and over by something they could run into accidentally. They might die one time, like I did the first time I investigated a beaver dam not knowing what it was, but after that they would know not to enter the area unprepared again. Meanwhile, the players that want tougher fights can seek them out, so that only people who want the fight need to worry about it, so both sides are getting what they want.

I would like to know if the message means that you are above a body of underground water. Or is it just a mesaage stating "there is nothing of value"?

"There are only turtles below." is essentially a tongue-in-cheek error message for "you are already at the lowest level, you can't prospect any deeper."
